Mwanza district hospital nurses lay down tools

Listen to this article

Nurses at Mwanza District Hospital have laid down tools demanding the transfer of District Health Officer (DHO) Ralph Piringu and District Nursing Officer (DNO), for allegedly  ill-treating them and other
junior members of staff.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the nurses cited the transfer of their colleagues from the hospital over “petty issues” which has led to those remaining at the facility to over-work.

“They are issuing transfer letters to nurses and any member of staff they have an issue with to the extent that the hospital has less than 40 nurses now. With the termination of locum, we are working as slaves,” said the source.

Mwanza District Hospital spokesperson Dikilani Chadza confirmed the sit-in in a separate interview, but refused to give further details.

He said a meeting between employees, the district hospital management and officials from the Nurses Council of Malawi is underway to resolve the differences.
