Mwanza district commissioner (DC) Gift Rapozo has advised people in the district to construct houses that withstand disasters.

He was speaking after a storm blew off roofs of about 58 buildings, including a church and a mosque in group village head Ngadziwe in the area of Senior Chief Kanduku in the district last Friday.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, after touring the area, Rapozo observed that most houses affected were poorly constructed and susceptible to such disasters.

He said: “We have advised them to make sure they construct strong houses that will stand these disasters or else they will keep losing their property or even lives.”

Rapozo said nobody died in the accident, but five people got injured and one is admitted to Mwanza District Hospital while the rest are being treated as outpatients.

Kanduku said so far no individual or organisation has come forward to assist the families that have been left homeless due to the accident.

He said: “I am calling on well-wishers to come forward and assist these people who have lost a lot of property and are in dire need of food, shelter, clothes, blankets and kitchen utensils.”

Kanduku said those affected are now seeking refuge in makeshift shelters in their compounds while others are staying in their relative’s homes.

He said the area previously received rains on December 25 last year. n
