President Peter Mutharika has appointed his guard commander Duncan Mwapasa as the new deputy inspector general of police responsible for administration.

Mwapasa replaces Lexten Kachama who was appointed as Inspector General and confirmed by Parliament on Thursday.

policeMinister of Information, Tourism and Culture Kondwani Nankhumwa said yesterday the appointment is “with immediate effect”.

Mwapasa first served as guard commander for former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika before he was removed from State House and posted to Rumphi Police as officer-in-charge following the death of Mutharika in April 2012.

He was one of the 11 suspects arrested by former president Joyce Banda’s regime for treason charges before he was later interdicted from police.

  1. It was obvious that Kachama was appointed as a ceremonial IG. This is typical Mulahko Wa Alomwe politics at play here.
If I were Kachama I would be thinking of existing the ceremonial post now rather than waiting until I am forced out and loose my pension money in the process.
Its not ideal to work while someone in the name of Mwapasa has stuck their nose against your backside.
