Mwase’s contract signing shelved

Flames coach Meck Mwase did not sign his one-year contract at the weekend as announced by government through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.

The ministry’s spokesperson Simon Mbvundula last week said they had finalised the contract and that the two parties would put pen to paper at the weekend.

Mwase: At least there has been some progress

However, Mwase confirmed having started the process, but said he was told that it would be completed later.

“I indeed travelled to Lilongwe where I was given a GP one form to sign, but I was told that the other documents were not yet ready, but at least some progress has been made” he said.

A GP one form contains a prospective government employee’s personal particulars.

Mbvundula yesterday said he needed time to follow up the issue with his colleagues at the ministry.

Mwase was hired as national football team coach on July 1 on recommendation by the Football Association of Malawi following an agreement  with government that he would be on its payroll, but over six months down the line, he is yet to sign his contract. He told The Nation in November that he felt insecure working without a contract.
