Malawi’s sole netball export Mwawi Kumwenda on Monday travelled to Chikhwawa District Hospital where she distributed some clothes to over 40 mothers and babies in the paediatrics ward.

This was one of her countrywide tours meant to give out the over K5 million (about $10 000) worth of items she collected from her friends in New Zealand where she plays for Easiyo Tactix Netball Club.

Kumwenda, who was accompanied by Diamonds’ shooter Wezzie Mzembe and Alliance Capital Sisters’ centre Maria Lameck, said it satisfies her heart to help the needy during this festive season.

“I started the distribution of these items in the Northern Region two weeks ago and I will keep on doing it until nothing is left in the container.

mwawi_ck4“I thank New Zealand people for heeding my plea to help me with the donation. I promise that every item will go to the intended individuals,” she said.

One of the beneficiaries, Dorica Zakeyu of Biyasoni Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Maseya in Chikwawa, said the clothes she has received have relieved her painstaking thoughts on how to get new clothes this festive period.
mwawi_ck2According to Chikhwawa Hospital’s nursing officer Grace Zakeyu, the donation will also go a long way in helping the mothers and the babies prevent certain infections that stem from poor hygiene.
