Australia-based netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda on Saturday made an impressive start to the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball season when she inspired her team, Melbourne Vixens, to a 59-58 victory in a tight-throat affair that stirred the passions of the turn out.

Mwawi, who netted 41 baskets from 42 attempts, was fittingly named Player-of-the-Match.

In an interview from Melbourne yesterday, the lanky goal shooter said: “It’s an amazing start to the new season and I am hoping for the best for the rest of the season.”

According to supernetball.com.au, Vixens withstood a furious Magpies comeback to claim the memorable win.

While heraldsun.com.au reported that: “In a game of momentum swings, the Vixens only won the second quarter in front of 6 817 vocal fans, but it was enough to see them through to a 59-58 round one triumph in a derby dubbed ‘The Battle’.

On the other hand, supernetball.com.au reported “Mwawi’s  reach and athleticism was hard to stop under the ring, but the Magpies were first to break the deadlock to open up an 11-8 lead. That advantage pushed out to five as the Magpies went on a run, but Mwawi hauled the Vixens back into the contest and gave the vocal crowd something to cheer for.

The scores were again deadlocked early in the fourth quarter, setting up a thrilling finish, and it was the Vixens who were able to remain composed and secure the result through Mwawi, who netted the winning goal with 42 seconds remaining.
