Peninsula Waves failed to progress to the finals of the Victorian Netball League (VNL) and eventual promotion after they lost 48-46 in a tight minor semi-final played at State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville on Thursday.

The game had to go into extra time after the two teams tied 46-46. VU went on to win the game 48-46.

The major semi-final winner will play the preliminary final winner in the VNL grand final on August 4 at 8pm. All the finals will be played at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

“The girls gave their best. It is unfortunate that we lost, but it was a great game,” said coach Robyn Pym.

Mwawi sounded heartbroken in a telephone interview from Melbourne: “I am in pain right now. We did everything we could to win the game, but we failed.

“It is more painful considering that we played well the whole season. I want to thank head coach Pym, the other two coaches and the whole committee here. It has been a wonderful season for me despite the pain I’m feeling tonight.”

Mwawi has been consistent in her second season at Waves, coming out top shooter for her team. She has also won several weekly awards for best goaler and, currently, she is a leading contender for the top goaler award which will be announced during the finals on August 4.

She is expected back home on holiday on August 10, she will join the Malawi Queens squad in South Africa to play friendly games.
