Mwawi’s Waves beat Genesis 53-48

Mwawi Kumwenda on Wednesday scored 40 baskets to lead her Australian team Peninsula Waves to victory over bitter rivals Boroondara Genesis 53-48 in a match played at State Netball Hockey Centre.

She made 52 attempts at goal, but netted 40, representing 97 percent shooting accuracy as Waves maintained the top spot in the first game of the second round.

When the two teams met in the first round, the game ended 42-41 in favour of Waves. .

In the Wednesday game, Waves coach Claire Houben partnered Mwawi with Stacie Proctor instead of Sellar Hork and the change worked well as Proctor supplied the most assists for Kumwenda.

Houben expressed delight with Mwawi’s splendid form.

“She [Mwawi] is just unstoppable. She is a great asset to the team and she really played well today like always,” she said.

On her team’s overall play Houben said: “I just felt that as each quarter went on and as the game went on, we ran the game out better than they did, physically and mentally.”
