Mwawi’s Waves overcome S. Saints
Mwawi Kumwenda’s career at Australian outfit Peninsula Waves continues to blossom.
On Wednesday, Mwawi helped Waves to overcome a resilient challenge from Southern Saints 59-54 at Ice Hockey Centre.
Mwawi scored 54 of the 59 baskets, two were netted by Stacie Proctor whereas the rest were scored by Sellar Hork.
The Malawi export started with Sellar in attack in the first two quarters. Sellar was later replaced by Stacie, who kept up the supply line to ensure Mwawi delivered victory in a hard-fought fixture.
Following the win, Waves continue to lead the Victorian Netball League (VNL) for the third consecutive week.
“It was a tough game, but I thank God we carried the day. We needed this victory so much if we are to be champions this year. Like I always say, it is always team work and that is what coach (Claire Houben) teaches us,” Mwawi said in an interview from Melbourne.
Houben was all praise for the Malawi Queens leading scorer.
“She is perfecting her game every week and she has good players in Stacie and Sellar who always supply her with balls. It was a tough game but we managed to hold our own,” Houben was quoted by The Weeklywebsite.
The Victorian Netball League has since gone on recess for two weeks and will resume the last week of April.
“This will give us enough time to refresh and we hope to come back stronger and continue to play the best netball. So far we have beaten big teams such as Western Lightning and Geelong Cougars. It’s still so far to go, but we’ll keep on trying,” said Mwai.
