Mwenda: This is my chance

Welterweight champion Alick Mwenda has a tough task to defend his belt for the second time in a row as he faces challenger Felix Mwamaso at Kamuzu Institute for Sports’ (KIS) inside arena today (Sunday).

The Malawi Defense Force (MDF) pugilist, who defended the title last December after defeating Mussa Mkwanda on technical knockout (TKO) in the fifth round, said on Saturday he is more than ready to make history as the first boxer in his category to defend the belt for the second consecutive time on the domestic scene.

“This is my chance to make history and I do not think Mwamaso has all the quality and techniques to stop me from achieving my goal. The belt belongs to me and to me alone; I cannot afford to lose it,” he said.

On the other hand, Mwamaso expressed his unyielding desire to win his first title, saying his fists ache for a knockout punch each time he imagines himself sorting it out against the titleholder in the ring.

“This is the only time that I can prove to the world that I am mature enough to drape a belt across my shoulder. I sweated blood during training and I know I am going to win this match,” Mwamaso said.

Before this do-or-die encounter, up-and-coming professional boxers Salim Chazama and Ernest Msoliza will take the stage in the main supporting bout.

This six-round non-title junior welterweight fight will determine the challenger for a title bout against Chrispin Moliati, according to the organisers of the bouts New Dawn Boxing Promotions.

The boxing promotion company’s manager Michael Chimaliza said all preparations for the high-profile bouts have been completed, saying the booking of the boxing theatre and the contract signing of all the boxers involved were done two months ago.
