Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive member James Mwenda was on Tuesday elected interim chairperson of the newly formed Malawi Anti-Doping Organisation (Mado).

Mwenda was ushered into office at Malawi Sun Hotel in Blantyre at the start of a three-day orientation workshop for a 12-member Mado board which was drilled on functionality of the organisation as well as provisions of the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and the International Convention Against Doping in Sport.

Medical doctor Mtisunge Kachingwe was elected Mwenda’s deputy while journalist Leornard Sharra was elected interim general secretary.

According to Sharra, other positions such as treasurer, vice-secretary and legal counsel will be filled at the next board meeting.

The workshop, which has been organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in conjunction with Sports Council and Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC), was opened by Minister of Sports Grace Chiumia.

Mado was formed in September 2013 in line with provisions of the International Convention Against Doping and Wada Code.
