Chrisy Mwenebungu on Saturday defied the chilly Mzuzu weather and emerged winner of the 2012 Presidential national senior ladies table tennis competition.

She beat Shyreen Pensulo 3-1 in the all-Lilongwe affair finals in the best of five at Mzuzu University.

Mwenebungu’s victory was the product of great strokes she fired at her opponent as she led 1-0, 2-1 and finally won 3-1.

“I dedicate this win to my late father,” said Mwenebungu, who is the first lady to win the tournament since 2009.

Pensulo saluted Mwenebungu for her feat: “She is great. She made nice strokes and her confidence paid-off.”

Mwenebungu received K25 000 (about $100) and a trophy while Pensulo pocketed K15 000 (about $60).

Winners in all the junior categories received K12 000 (about $48), K8 000 (about $32) and K5 000 (about $20).

Guest of honour at the prize presentation, Northern Region Sports Development Officer Georgina Msowoya, thanked government for making it possible this time around for Mzuzu to host the tournament. She appealed to the athletes to work hard, saying the sport offers scholarships and job opportunities.
