Mysterious marks frighten Zomba residents

People of Sogoja Village in Zomba are living in fear after mysterious marks were scribbled on their houses at night.

Village Head Sojola made the sentiments on Tuesday in reaction to the communities’ call to establish the genesis of the marks.

According to the chief, some of her subjects woke up last Saturday in fear when they found red marks on walls of their houses.

Vukanimo Kazembe, a landlady whose four houses have the marks, believes that the writing are being made by people for reasons yet to be known.

“During the night of Friday to Saturday, my dogs barked for long and I heard steps of people. But when I peeped through the window, I saw no one. I slept again thinking that the dogs were scrambling for something. When I woke up on Saturday, I found the marks on the wall,” she said.

Songani Ward councillor  Andrew Tambala also said houses in his area have also been smeared with the mysterious marks.

He said some houses are labelled XM while have unknown symbols.

Zomba district commissioner (DC) Emmanuel Bambe said he was aware of the strange marks.

“The council has deployed staff in all the affected areas to investigate the matter in detail for action,” he said.

Eastern Region Police public relations officer  Joseph Sauka also said the police were aware of the issue.

“Investigations are under way to establish the matter. We urge people not to live in fear as police has intensified security in the district to apprehend the perpetrators,” he said.

Some of the affected areas are Malosa, Songani, Ulumba, Mindano, Mtala, Sogoja and Matiti. n
