Former Malawi Queens’ shooter Emma Mzagada needs at least K1.5 million to undergo surgery at BeitCure International Hospital in Blantyre.

Mzagada has been bedridden at her ramshackle house in Chilomoni Township, Blantyre, for at least two years but she disclosed yesterday that the main problem is a deep wound in her right-leg, which makes her immobile.

Ligowe (R) and Mdezo (L) presents K100 000 from Mwawi to Mzagada

According to Mzagada, she was advised to get operated on at the hospital but funding has been a problem.

“I cannot move my leg because of the extreme pain I go through when I try to do so. I need well-wishers to help me find money for my treatment. So far, I thank Mwawi [Kumwenda] and other well-wishers for the support,” Mzagada said.

Meanwhile, Mwawi made a personal contribution of K100 000 through Kukoma Diamonds’ team manager Sellah Mwafulirwa-Ligowe and centre Eneles Mdezo on Monday.

Netball lovers on Facebook pages such as Malawi Netball Lovers have also intensified a campaign to raise funds towards Mzagada’s treatment. Other individuals such as her former team-mate Ruth Kaipa-Chimombo and former Queens’ coach Edith Kaliati have as well been helping her with money for food and other stuff.

Faggie Mwalweni, a former umpire who is leading the fundraising campaign, said they are planning to visit Mzagada  this Friday which is a public holiday.

“Emma did a lot for the nation out of love for her country and we also need to be there for her in her time of need. Those willing to help can contact me on 0999 492 048,” she said.

Mzagada diligently served the Malawi Queens as a top-notch shooter from 1995 to 2009, winning numerous individual awards.

On her part, Mwawi, who plays for top-league side Vixens in Australia, said she has decided to assist the former MTL Queens (now Thunder Queens) player to appreciate the contribution Mzagada made to the status of Malawi netball on the global stage.

“Malawi netball is well-known in the world due to the standards players such as Mzagada set in terms of performance. In fact, she is one of the top-players that inspired me to take netball as my favourite sport,” Kumwenda said.

Nevertheless, NAM president Rosy Chinunda yesterday said they will sit down to strategise how to assist the ailing netball legend.
