Mzimba chief urges men to enrol for adult literacy classes

Traditional Authority (T/A) Kampingo Sibande of Mzimba has urged men who cannot read and write to swallow their pride and enrol for adult literacy classes so that they contribute more effectively towards the development of their lives and communities.

The chief said this during the week when he presented certificates to 70 community members who completed an adult literacy course offered by DAPP Mzimba Teachers Training College (TTC).

Kampingo Sibande said it is sad that illiterate men are denying themselves the opportunity to learn for fear of being ridiculed by some members of the community.

“Education is key to the development of every person. Men who can’t read and write should, therefore, make every effort to enrol for adult literacy classes regardless of what others might say,” he said.

Out of the 70 graduates, only two were men.

DAPP Mzimba TTC operations manager Dominick Nali said the college is offering adult literacy classes to communities around the college to enable them to read and write and actively contribute towards development activities in their areas.

Nali said the TTC is targeting to train over 200 women as they constitute the majority of the people who cannot read and write.

“However, men who cannot read and write are also being encouraged to enrol in adult literacy classes being offered at Bawa, Chasato, Mtuza and Mbwiriwiza training centres,” said Nali.
