Mzimba develops five-year development plan

Members of M’mbelwa District Council in Mzimba District say they are excited with the formulation of a five-year development plan covering the period 2017 to 2022.

Speaking in an interview, councillors could not hide their excitement  saying it is a milestone.

The country’s former vice-president  Khumbo Kachali, who is also legislator for Mzimba South-West constituency was equally happy, saying with this plan, Mzimba will develop.

The council has been holding consultation meetings with different stakeholders to seek their input.

The council’s director of planning and development Precious Kamtsitsi said in an interview that the plan has the potential to reduce poverty which is at 60 percent in the district.

He urged people to support the plan which will strengthen the council to generate enough revenue”

He said: “As a council, we acknowledge that there are many challenges faced by the council such as water shortage, food insecurity, low education standards, diseases and poor roads infrastructure. Using the plan, we will be eradicating most of the challenges.”

Senior Chief Mabulabo commended the council for the plan, saying it is a roadmap to development.

Priority areas in the plan include agriculture, water development and climate change, education and skills development, security, youth unemployment, energy, forestry, tourism development, transport, infrastructure, health and population. n
