Nation Publications Limited (NPL), in partnership with Unicaf University, has awarded a master’s in business administration (MBA) scholarship to a student as one way of giving aspiring youth an opportunity to attain higher learning.

The scholarship has been awarded to Langson Samala, a Mzuzu University (Mzuni) graduate, who was selected ahead of over 50 applicants.

NPL chief executive officer Mbumba Banda said Samala satisfied the requirements of the scholarship by demonstrating that he has a need for the tuition, in addition to demonstrating his ability.

She said she is aware that many students need help and, as a communications company, NPL does all it can to facilitate communication between stakeholders in education and, through stories published in the papers, some needy students have accessed help.

Said Banda: “When we carry such stories, we have always had a positive response where such students are assisted. So, as Nation, I think that all we can do is assure everyone out there that we provide information and also facilitate communication where there is need to help people.”

Unicaf chief executive officer, Nicos Nicolau, said the overwhelming response from the applicants speaks volumes about the need for support in tertiary education.

He said: “We think that people should take advantage of what we have to offer because such opportunities are not readily available in Malawi. We want people to earn internationally recognised qualifications without having to leave the country.

“Most of the applications could qualify for the scholarship. Unfortunately, we could not award to all of them, but we are currently in a discussion with Nation Publications Ltd that maybe we can do this again.”

In his remarks, Samala said he was happy that he had been awarded the scholarship to study one of the most sought-after qualifications in the world.

He said: “I cannot suppress my happiness for being awarded a scholarship to study a master’s in business administration which is one of the most sought-after qualifications.”

During the ceremony, Unicaf awarded tablets to 20 of its students to help them in their studies.  n
