Mzuni students attack leader

A mob of students at Mzuzu University (Mzuni) on Tuesday night allegedly attacked Mzuni Students’ Representative Committee president Moses Chalera for advising them not to demonstrate in the streets.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mzuni students blocked the Mzuzu–Karonga M1 Road to force authorities to pay school fees and stationery allowance for 200 students who were denied loans by Malawi Savings Bank (MSB).

Their action came before management asked them to pay fees or leave campus and before President Joyce Banda’s response to a petition on the problems.

Chalera confirmed the attack on Wednesday, saying about 100 students vandalised his room before assaulting him. He said he was the only one attacked.

During the time of the interview, Chalera was at the hospital receiving treatment and waiting for medical report to submit to police. He said he was getting better, but was still in pain.

According to Chalera, he identified seven students who masterminded the attack and reported them to police.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Norah Chimwala said she was yet to be updated on the attack. However, she said six students were arrested in the demonstrations.
