Students at Mzuzu University (Mzuni) will set aside their books and assignments tomorrow to showcase Malawi’s culture during Mzuni Cultural Day at the campus.

According to organisers, the day-long event will put on display several cultural elements that reflect the traditions of various ethnic groups.

“We have arranged several cultural activities, including traditional dances such as malipenga, gule wamkulu, beni and tchopa. People will also enjoy local foods such as thobwa, kondowole and mfutso,” said Bwighane Trigger Mwenelupembe, coordinator of the event.

He said other cultural displays, such as traditional dressings and a mock wedding ceremony, will form part of the event.

“Everything will be cultural oriented, ranging from food, songs and dances and even the type of food. We need to bring something new that people will enjoy culturally. We want patrons to enjoy local foods,” said Mwenelupembe.

The event will be spiced by a music performance by Moses Makawa.

“We will not tolerate anything foreign; even the music performance will be local, that is why we have invited Moses Makawa to spice the occasion. We will also have local poetry recitals by Robert Chiwamba,” he said.
