Mzuni’s satirical play a must watch

Mzuzu University Theatre Arts Group (Mutag)’s play, Vested Powers, staged at the just ended international conference on Malawian literature in Mzuzu was about how satire is used to ridicule Bingu’s regime.

The play, which drew reference to political malaise in the last regime, made fun of cabinet ministers, the police and the chiefs. The play also delved into issues of police involvement in classroom affairs, chiefs being paraded on state television and political arrests.

The play, written and directed by Misheck Banda, incorporated imaginative scenes which propelled the audience into deep thought.

All in all, blending current affairs with some inventive scenes made Vested Powers distinct from other plays. In fact, it is a play to watch.

In an interview, Misheck Banda, lecturer of English at Mzuzu University, refused to relate the play to Malawian politics.

“The play is set in an imagined country and not Malawi,” he argued, saying other countries also lost their leaders.
