Mzuzu Academy women volleyball team beat Phwezi 2 -1 on Sunday in the finals of the Northern Region Schools Presidential Initiative on Sports to retain the regional honours.

The finals were played at Katoto Secondary School Court in Mzuzu.

Mzuzu Academy were a better side, featuring skipper Vickness Chiumia, setter Emma Banda, Ester Njikho, Constance Mhone, Charity Hara and Feyi Nyirenda who stamped game authority to the end.

Phwezi, dressed in green, were guilty of ball-watching and at times clashing into each other in an attempt to clear dangerous balls, a sign that they lacked coordination.

However, Phwezi captain Tendai Tambala, with assistance from Miriam Kumwenda, Olino Mjumira, Tereza Mzumara, Chancy Gondwe, Vic Munthali and Carol Zomba also had their best moments when they out-played Mzuzu Academy to draw level before the regional champions, who are also Malawi title holders, grabbed the winner.

Mzuzu Academy head teacher George Bowery said the school would party using the whole K50 000 prize money. Phwezi received K30 000 while Moyale pocketed K20 000 for finishing third. In men’s volleyball, Moyale came from a 2-0 result to win 3-2 over Katoto Secondary School in the finals. Lidoma Private finished third.

Northern Region Education Divisional Manager’s representative, Victor Lungu, said he was impressed with the performance of the teams, but regretted that only three government institutions took part.
