Rehabilitation of the Mzuzu Airport has taken off with visibility studies amid prospects from tourism and business players that they would get a boost once the airport is completed.

Minister of Transport and Public Works spokesperson James Chakwera said studies on the airport have been done but was quick to mention actual work would not commence this year.

“The building department under the Ministry of Transport  and Public Works was tasked to carry out the study and propose needs to be done.

Government allocated K200 million for the rehabilitation project however this money might not enough to cater for the whole rehabilitation process,” he said.

He said government is currently banking on local resources to rehabilitate the airport as no investor has come forth or shown interest to finance the project.

Mzuzu airport has previously made headlines on the sights of dairy cattle which  are grazing too close to the runway and floods that hit the city earlier this year.

Mzuzu city council chief executive officer McCloud Kadammanja in an interview said having a fully functional airport in city would foster development and tourism.
