Mzuzu Bus Depot relocation on course
The Mzuzu City Council (MCC) says a feasibility study on relocation of Mzuzu Bus Station to Dunduzu will begin soon.
In February this year, MCC unveiled plans to relocate the bus station to create space in the central business district (CBD) where the depot is located.
The council plans to construct a multi-storey building on the vacated area, according to earlier reports.
In an interview yesterday, the council’s public relations officer Karen Msiska said a feasibility study on the project will begin as soon as the terms of reference for the consultant have been developed.
“The project is going to be implemented under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. The commission met with MCC officials a few weeks ago setting out the terms for the project,” he said.
Msiska said the team is meeting again soon for more discussions. He said the new depot will have parking bays for big buses, minibuses and taxis.
While welcoming the development, Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (Moam) national secretary Coxley Kamange advised the council to consider the eight kilometre distance from the CBD to Dunduzu.
He also appealed to the council to involve all the stakeholders in the project. n
