Mzuzu City Council has started construction of a K5.6 billion bypass connecting Mzuzu-Mzimba and Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay roads to ease congestion in the city.

The road, which will also serve Chimaliro, Zolozolo and part of Luwinga townships, will run from Mzuzu Government Secondary School junction to Luwinga Industrial Area.

In an interview, the council spokesperson McDonald Gondwe said the construction works will be in phases as the council does not have money to cover the whole10- kilometre stretch at a go.

He said the council has started the project with K500 million that government allocated to it last year for urban roads projects.

“Once completed, the road is expected to ease congestion in the central business district,” said Gondwe.

He also said the council plans to work on another bypass from Dunduzu to Lusangazi that will serve motorists using the M1.

Concerned Citizens spokesperson Gresham Jeke said the people were pleased with the project.

Through the urban roads projects, the council has rehabilitated some roads in city.
