Mzuzu Cycling Club intensify 2016 preps

Mzuzu Cycling Club is leaving no stone unturned as it prepares for the 2016 cycling competitions.

Mzuzu Cycling Club chairperson Potiphar Munthali said the club wants to scoop more titles in the 2016 hence the thorough preparations.

“We have set targets. Our vision is to have at least two cyclists in top two in each cycling tournament,” said Munthali.

Malawi has Luwawa Cycling Race, Tour de Dwangwa, Illovo Cycling Race and Presidential National Cycling Race.

Last weekend the club held a two-day Tour de Mzuzu that covered a distance 180 kilometres.

Munthali said the tour also assisted the 12-member Mzuzu-based cyclists in selling the sport to the communities in the city.

This is not the first time for the club to conduct such tours.

Last year, the Mzuzu Cycling Club members covered 72 kilometres where they visited Livingstonia Mission in Rumphi.

According to Munthali, the club has roped in new members through such tours.

“It is clear that people do not associate cycling as a sport, they think sports is football and netball only, but tours like these have assisted us to sensitise the public about this sport,” said Munthali.

Meanwhile, club member Blessings Kumwenda will represent Malawi in a 94.7-Kilometre International Race in South Africa in June this year.

Kumwenda said the Tour de Mzuzu was part of preparations for the international tournament. n
