Construction of Mzuzu Flea Market which started six years ago, but stalled due to lack of funding has resumed.

Mzuzu City Council chief executive officer Thomas Chirwa said in an interview on Wednesday the project will be completed by September this year.

In June this year, Press Trust committed K14 million (US$43 613) towards the completion of the market. Chirwa said labour is being provided by officials from the council.

“What has happened is that Press Trust has paid for all materials needed and labour has been provided by the city council’s Department of Engineering,” he said.

Chirwa said K3 million (US$9 345) has already been remitted to suppliers for materials so that the project is completed within the time frame.

“We had some hiccups, but now all things have been sorted out and preliminary works have started,” he said.

Mzuzu vendors president Stanley Simbeye welcomed the development, saying the opening of the flea market is long overdue.

“Our colleagues from Lilongwe, Zomba and Blantyre are plying their business in flea markets. So, we also want the same,” he said.
