Due to shortage of staff houses at Mzuzu Government Secondary School, some teachers are being accommodated in the school’s kitchen, it has been learnt.

The school lies in the outskirts of Mzuzu City, making it difficult for teachers to secure decent houses away from the school campus.

Head teacher Timothy Magagula Kumwenda said this on Saturday when a grouping of the school’s class of 1993-1997 donated 62 pieces of curtains to be used in the girls’ hostel.

He said: “We are facing many challenges as the school was built many years ago. Materials in the library are not enough, the school has no fence and teachers’ houses are inadequate.

“As a result, three of our teachers are living in the school’s kitchen.”

The head teacher thanked the alumni for the support, saying female students will now sleep in the hostel which they were failing to use because it had no curtains.

Speaking on behalf of the alumni, Alemekezeke Chitanja said they felt it was important to give back to the school as it played a big role towards their future.

Ministry of Education, Science and Technology spokesperson Manfred Ndovi said he was not aware of the problem at the school. n
