The Civil Society Network has been launched in Mzuzu.

Speaking during the ceremony on Friday at St John of God Centre, Mzuzu city Council Director of Town Planning and Estate Management Services Alexander Chirambo who was guest of honour thanked the German cooperation for hatching and financing the initiative.

Chirambo said the forum will help regulate and uphold values of transparency and accountability among non-governmental organisations (NGOs) implementing projects in areas of health, education, media, gender, youth empowerment among others in Mzuzu.

Said Chirambo: “NGO Members will be involved in the financial planning, implementation and be able to provide checks and balances including sensitising the residents on the importance of paying city rates and other revenues to the council for effective service delivery in Mzuzu.”

Speaking at a similar function, Council for Non-governmental Organisations in Malawi (Congoma) representative Patrick Mwale warned members that the success of the organisation will be compromised, if some institutions feel big and influential enough in the operations of the organisation than others.

He then appealed for corroboration and unity if the mission is to succeed.

On her part, the NGO Board chairperson, Emilly Banda said the initiative is vital because it will reinstall donor confidence and the beneficiaries of the implemented projects.

She asked international organisations to go through the network when implementing projects in the communities for proper follow-ups to ensure the targeted beneficiaries are satisfied with the service provision.

The vice chairperson for the network Josh Huang said the network will ensure equal financial benefits among the NGOs so that no one is bigger than the other in terms of development.

During the network launch, Mzuzu City council, Congoma and the NGO board signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure that what has been agreed is followed.
