At a time when female musicians in Malawi are rare in secular music, Lady Pace is scaling the heights in Mzuzu.
Lady Pace, a diploma student at Mzuzu University, has released four singles— Ten Wishes, Tonight, Life so Unfair and Run—for her first album Wanted.
The debutant has already earned slots on MBC Television and various radio stations with Run.
According to the 20-year-old, she discovered her talent at age nine. Unlike many, she learnt the ropes by imitating her cousins who used to sing.
In 2010, Blackface family, a dancehall crew in Mzuzu, introduced her to commercial music.
“It was a crew of six people. Together, we released a mix tape Maphandwo,†says Lady Pace.
She briefly stopped singing in 2010 to concentrate on her studies. She has re-launched her career this year and signed to Shokkwave label.
She sings hip-hop and R&B. She says her message revolves around encouraging fellow women to believe in themselves, for they can do it big as long as they have the talent.
“Ladies such as Complex, Rina and Tigris are making it big. But here we are lagging behind. So I appeal to ladies with a talent here to come out of their shells,†she says.
With few women representation in the music industry, she finds it challenging as all the people she associates with are males.
“Every time I go to the studio, I meet guys only. So, I roll with guys mostly, consequently, this paints a bad image of me to some people. I would love to change this mentality because I am just interested in music,†she says.
