Mzuzu Rotary Club to raise funds for blind students’ hostel
Mzuzu Rotary Club on Saturday held a bed race in Mzuzu City to raise funds for the construction of a hostel at St Maria Goretti School for the Blind in Nkhata Bay.
According to Rotarian Naomi Luwanja, the project is estimated to cost K82 million ($114 685).
“We have managed to raise K1.8 million ($2 517) from the bed race as a starter pack. This is the first step in our efforts to support them because every journey starts with a step,” said Luwanja.
She said the current hostel constructed by some tourists is congested.
One of the participants, Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) Mzuzu Domestic Taxes station manager Wezi Gondwe, whose organisation contributed about K500 000 towards the cause, said it supported the initiative as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Eight teams participated in the race, including FDH Bank, Airtel Malawi, Toyota Malawi, Mzuzu University and Carlsberg.
Carlsberg emerged winners after beating Toyota Malawi and Airtel Malawi in the finals.
