Mzuzu now has a select side that will be playing in the Simama League next season thanks to Member of Parliament (MP) for Mzuzu City Joseph Njikho, who will be sponsoring the team.

The parliamentarian, who sponsors the city’s Uncle Jose Mzuzu Football League that has clubs that are not participating in the Simama League and Super League, told Nation on Sunday that his wish is to have a strong side that should later join top-flight league.

“I feel sponsoring league is not enough. We still need to have more Super League teams in the North. My plan is that we should have Mzuzu Select team where best players from my league should be incorporated and participate in the Simama League and later Super League. I feel doing that will be much better as far as development of football is concerned,” said Njikho.

The Mzuzu parliamentarian said he had already secured a friendly game which the select side will play against Usisya Boys in Nkhata-Bay.

“I am serious with developing football in the country. I have already talked to my friend in Nkhata Bay who have also assembled a strong side from Usisya to play with the Mzuzu Select side,” said Njikho.

The K1.5 million Uncle Jose Mzuzu football league will end on December 19.

Chibavi Select, Katoto Stars, Sanwecka, Nkhorongo United, Lunyangwa, Young Bullets, Zolozolo and Chibavi Rangers are expected to fight for honours from Saturday next week.

According to Masiya Nyasulu, who is the league’s coordinator, the league’s champions will receive K300 000 while the runners-up will get K200 000.

“The league is progressing well; we are now heading for quarter-finals. Out of 41 teams who joined the league, only eight are remaining.

”We have planned to finish all the league games by December 19. The champions will get K300 000 while the runners-up will receive K200 000,” he said. n
