Mzuzu City International Volleyball Tournament will become an annual event after sponsors committed to continue supporting it, organisers have said.

The inaugural Mzuzu City International Volleyball Tournament, held at Katoto Court from August 6-8, saw Tanzaniá’s Mbeya Best VI win in the men’s category while Lilongwe-based Vixens scooped the women’s title.

The competition’s organising chairperson Killy Msukwa said the sponsors were impressed with the management of the event.

“We have an assurance from sponsors of continued funding towards the tournament. In such a scenario, we have decided to turn it into an annual sports event,” he said.

Speaking during prize presentation at Grand Palace Hotel on Sunday, Fisd Company Limited marketing and communications manager Wezzie Chiumia said the tournament has shown that the Malawi has potential to do well in volleyball.

He said: “Our partnership with volleyball through this tournament has shown that we have talent that if supported it can put the country on the map as far as sports is concerned.

“As a company, we have a good reason to continue with the support. We just need to sit down with the organisers to strategise how best we can do it in a unique way.”

On the other hand, Grand Palace Hotel general manager Sam Phiri said they are ready to continue sponsoring the tournament.

“We are happy with the fun we saw during the tournament. We can assure you that Grand Palace will always be available to continue with the sponsorship,” he said.

The guest of honour, Moyale Barracks commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Thoko Chazema urged the youth to have passion for sports and appreciate that they can earn a living from it just like in a formal job.

“We have seen individuals earning well in sports. It is my appeal to youths in the country to have passion for sports. Without a passion you cannot progress,” he said.

The tournament was sponsored by several companies, including Fisd Company Limited, Grand Palace Hotel, AIA Business Consultancy and Nyaluwangwa Farms.
