National Aids Commission (NAC) has approved about K13.4 million ($22,302.7) as the 2015/2016 funding for Zomba City Council and Zomba District Council to support HIV and Aids related activities.

Speaking at Zomba District Council during an HIV and Aids Response Strategic Documents Dissemination meeting, Zomba district NAC coordination officer Ahmidu Tung’ande said the money is for the commemoration of World Aids day, Candle Light Memorial, HTC Week, orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) support, coordination meetings and monitoring and evaluation.

Participants at the meeting, however, complained that the funding approved to the two councils is inadequate.

In his response, Tung’ande said the commission is also receiving inadequate funding from donors.

He said: “NAC is also facing financial problems following the decrease in funding by donors to support Malawi in HIV and Aids and other related activities.”

Zomba District Council is expected to receive K6 874 460.24 ($11,441.7) while the city council will receive K6 473 183.40 ($10,773.8).—Mana
