Mzuzu-based Gurtej Singh Nain walked tall on the greens of Kasasa Golf Club in Dwangwa on Saturday after beating a field of 75 contestants to win the Nico General Golf Tournament.

Nain registered 36 points, a point ahead of Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) captain John Gift Mwakhwawa. Dwangwa-based Vincent Madikhula was third on 34 points.golf

For his feat, Nain walked away with a trophy and an LCD flat screen television.

“Putting was my strength today and that helped me a lot. I had my best game on second hole where I got 11 points. It was a great day for me. I dedicate this win to my family, they have been very supportive,” said Nain in his victory speech.

He also expressed gratitude to Nico General for organising the tournament.

Patridge Shycall had the longest drive whereas Madikhula was the nearest to the pin.

In the ladies category, Ruth Mvula salvaged some pride for hosts Kasasa after emerging champion with 40 points, pipping Lilian Kawaza who had 34 points. Mvula also had the longest drive.

In her victory speech, Mvula appealed to golfers to encourage their wives and daughters to play golf.

Nico General chief executive officer Eric Chapola said the tournament was organised as a thank you to their Illovo customers in Dwangwa.

“Through this tournament we are thanking Illovo for the support they give us annually. We also take advantage to sell our products to golfers and I am grateful to them for patronising this event,” said Chapola.
