Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) says it will require K35 million (about $87 500) for the national team, the Queens, to participate in Diamond Series and Fast Five tournaments.

The Malawi Queens are set to participate in the Diamond Series which will be hosted by Australia from October 15 to 19. The tournament will feature the hosts, New Zealand, South Africa, Botswana and the Queens.

After the Diamond Series, the Queens will then fly to New Zealand for the World Fast Five Tournament which will feature England, Fiji, Jamaica, Australia, South Africa and the hosts.

NAM president Rosy Chinunda said part of the expenses for the Diamond Series will be met by the hosts.

“Air tickets, internal travel expenses and accommodation will be paid for by the hosts, Australia. We need money for camp, food and allowances for the players and travelling officials.” she said.

As for the Fast Five Tournament, air tickets and accommodation for 15 delegates will be paid for by the organisers. However, NAM will be required to pay $5 000 (about K1.6m) participation fee plus allowances and other logistics.

“It is unusual this year because in the past we were not required to pay any participation fee. But for both competitions, K35 million will be enough. We appeal to well-wishers to assist us to make our girls succeed,” said Chinunda.

She said it is important for the Queens to participate in the Diamond Series as the games will prepare the team for the Fast Five Tournament.

“As we seek to break into the top three in the world, we need to prepare well and the Diamond Series will offer our girls a great opportunity as we will play against top teams such as New Zealand and Australia. The experience will prove vital when we face Jamaica and England at the Fast Five,” said Chinunda.
