Nampak Malawi has given Tertiary Education Students Sports Association of Malawi (Tessam) K2.58 million (about $6 789) worth of sports equipment.

Had it not been for the donation made on Tuesday at College of Medicine (CoM) in Blantyre, the over 70 Tessam athletes, currently, camping at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) could have used old sports equipment for the sixth time at the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (Cucsa) Games scheduled for Lusaka, Zambia from August 16-23.

Among the equipment donated to the Malawi team, which will compete in 15 sporting codes in Lusaka, are football, basketball, netball, volleyball, athletics and lawn tennis uniforms and 16 pairs of soccer boots.

“We have been wearing the same set of uniforms since we hosted the competition in 2008, but now we are relieved to have new equipment,” said Tessam president Professor Alfred Mtenje.

According to Mtenje, the support from Nampak and the K4 million (about $10 526) they obtained from the Sports Council have made over 60 percent of their K11 million (about $30 000) budget.

On his part, Nampak marketing manager Nyakhoko Nsona said they thought of assisting Tessam to give back to the establishment that trained most of their staff.

Sports Council executive secretary George Jana urged Tessam to win more medals at the Cucsa Games.
