National survey to help in democratic governance

A household survey the National Statistical Office (NSO) is currently undertaking on justice and accountability is expected to help measure progress in the country’s democratic governance sector.

In a statement issued yesterday signed by commissioner for statistics Mercy Kanyuka, the survey started on May 1 and is expected to end on June 11 in all the country’s 28 districts.

Kanyuka: It is running in all districts

“The objective of the survey is to collect baseline data that will be used in the Democratic Governance sector,” reads the statement.

While noting that the survey will contribute to the country’s socio-economic development, Kanyuka, in the statement, urges Malawians to cooperate with enumerators that are conducting the exercise.

NSO is also scheduled to conduct the 2018 Malawi Population and Housing Census from September whose budget is K15.8 billion, K5.5 billion of which will come from donors.

In the 2018/19 National Budget, government has proposed an allocation of K6.4 billion for the census.

But in a published 2018 Economic and Fiscal Policy Statement, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe said despite successfully containing expenditures within annual fiscal targets in the past three years, growth in statutory expenditures, especially the wage bill, interest payments and domestic debts, has undermined budget credibility.
