Nawena hails improved subsidy

Malawi’s Member of Parliament for Thyolo Thava Lifred Nawena on Tuesday praised the implementation of the current Farm Input Subsidy Programme (Fisp) by the current Joyce Banda administration.

Ironically, most of the opposition MPs who have spoken on the subsidy have had no kind words regarding its implementation due to reports that the fertiliser was mixed with sand and not accessible. Nawena first pointed out that the question on the order paper appearing under his name was supposed to be there last year and not during this season.

He, however, added: “That question was meant for last year and not for this particular sitting, in fact it is worth noting that there has been a massive improvement in terms of fertiliser distribution this year as compared to the previous years.”

As Nawena spoke there was hand clapping from the government benches while the opposition side especially, the DPP, looked at him in surprise.

His remarks also prompted deputy Minister of Agriculture Ulemu Chilapondwa to come in and commend the legislator for his spirit to commend government where it is due.

“I have to thank the honourable MP for being bold to admit and applaud us,” said the deputy Minister.
