Missi Kathumba and Steve Nazombe finished on first and second positions in their respective groups at the 109-Kilometre Cape Argus Cycle Tour in South Africa.

Blantyre Cycling Club (BCC) chairperson Dyton Chimwaza said the results are fair considering that the international event attracted a total of 28 652 cyclists from around the globe.

He said the fact that the two cyclists, whose trip Illovo Sugar Company funded as reward for taking top-two slots during 2015 Illovo Classic Cycling Race, used heavier bikes than those of the other contestants, justifies the results.

“These are good results bearing in mind the fact that most of their opponents used lighter and speedy bikes,” Chimwaza said.

Illovo Company’s assistant general manager (marketing) Walter Nyamilandu said they are happy that the country’s ambassadors managed to at least, dominate their respective groups during the race.

In spite of that, Kathumba’s record at the South Africa race has slumped by 16 minutes as he crossed the finish line in 3:04:40 hours.

Nazombe, who is Illovo Classic titleholder, completed the international race in 2:58:22 hours.
