Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony to schools that participated in the competition, FMB Central Region commercial manger Joyce Kumwenda said children in the country are being encouraged to plant trees to help protect and care for the environment.

“FMB will continue supporting the tree planting competition because environmental conversation remains part of society the bank is operating in,” Kumwenda said.

Head teacher for Chipuzumumba, Robertson Mumba, expressed joy that his school emerged the best. He said this will motivate pupils to continue taking care of the environment.

The bank gave about 600 seedlings to six schools and about 90 percent of the trees have since survived.

The campaign was introduced in conjunction with the Wildlife and Environment Society of Malawi (Wesm).

As part of the prize, Chipuzumumba received wheelbarrows, watering cans and a trophy.
