NCIC lobbies Malawi Govt on contracts

The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) is lobbying Malawi Government to ensure that 30 percent of its work given to foreign companies should be subcontracted to Malawians.

NCIC chief executive officer Linda Phiri said this on Sunday when the institution awarded four best exhibitors during the construction and building fair that ended Monday in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre.

Phiri said they are discussing with government on the possibility of reducing lending rates to its members.

“International firms borrow at low cost from financial institutions in their countries and we want that to also happen here. Lending rates are on the higher side and that affects our operations,” said Phiri.

Duroblock Construction and Joiner won the most outstanding award, Cable Manufacturers was decorated with the most responsive award while the best and up-and-coming award went to Cement Products Limited whose plant is in Mangochi.

Zalero Contractors scooped the most innovative award for its efforts to produce energy products deemed to be friendly to the environment.
