A WhatsApp group calling itself Support Agnes Foundation has donated financial and material resources to the family of 10-year-old orphan Agnes Magombo of Gumbo Village, Traditional Authority Mwase in Kasungu.

The young girl has been selling water in plastic tubes around Kasungu Municipality to support her family of six, including her grandmother and siblings.

The WhatsApp group’s founder Richard Maliwu, who initially met Agnes selling water, said he was shocked to hear her story.

Maliwu hands over the items to Agnes

“We were concerned to hear that she is looking after her granny and siblings; hence, mobilising resources to help her,” he said.

Maliwu appealed to other well-wishers to join them to support the family with a good house and help the children get education.

Agnes’ grandmother, Margaret Magombo, said they were experiencing extreme poverty.

“I ask more well-wishers to help the children with clothes and education,” she said.

The items included two packets of sugar, one kilogramme of salt, five tablets of soap, two packets of laundry soap, petroleum jelly, clothes and K6 000 cash.

Meanwhile, the group has consulted Kasungu District Social Welfare Office and Youth Action for Development to assess the family to be considered for social cash transfer and education assistance.
