Nepad decries youth unemployment rates

The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) Anglophone projects manager, Justina Dugbazah, has observed that unemployment is the biggest barrier blocking young people from contributing to the development of the continent.

She said in Blantyre on Friday that youth unemployment is on the rise in all African countries, defying combined efforts by states and governments to tame the problem.

“Regrettably, the problem is further compounded by lack of resources that could enable the youth to venture into entrepreneurial activities.

“Thus, young people are being denied the opportunity to contribute to the development of their countries,” said Dugbazah.

She said Nepad organisation has partnered with institutions across the continent in providing skills training that could help the youth gain independence.

Youth unemployment is the biggest problem in Africa in which more young people are finishing tertiary education but cannot secure employment.
