Netball Association approves Kukoma Bonanza

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has approved Kukoma Diamonds sponsors Capital Oil Refining Industries (Cori) to stage a four-team invitational tournament.

The two-day pre-season tournament is slated for Blantyre Youth Centre from July 29 to 30.

Apart from host team Diamonds, the other participating teams are Tigresses, Thunder Queens and Alliance Capital Stars.

Giants Tigresses and Diamonds will tussle in the tournament

NAM general secretary Carol Bapu said the tournament will help teams to tune-up for the forth coming season.

“We are grateful to Cori because the tournament will help the teams gear up for the new season after a lengthy beak,” she said.

Diamonds general secretary Chimwemwe Bakali said they are delighted with NAM’s consent and that preparations for the tournament are at an advanced stage.

“We are formalising everything on Monday. We will work jointly with the Blantyre and Districts Netball League (BDNL) to make this a reality,” he said.

The winners will get K300 000 and all the participating teams will receive appearance fees yet to be disclosed.

Bakali also said they intend to come up with entry fees and the proceeds will most likely be shared by participating teams.

Tigresses team manager Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa, Thunder Queens coach Christina Mkwanda-Nsinji and Alliance Capital Stars chairperson Dalitso Chinyama have confirmed their teams’ participation even though they are waiting for official communication.

Meanwhile, Bakali has hailed Cori for organising the tournament, saying: “It shows that Cori has the will to develop the sport.”

On her part, Cori sponsorship coordinator Violet Kapolo said they look forward to an exciting pre-season tournament. n
