South Africa-based Malawian engineer Tiwone Mdina on Friday hosted Africa Amateur Chess Championship gold medalist Chiletso Chipanga to a lavish dinner at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre.

Mdina, who is in the country on holiday, also donated K100 000 to Chipanga for becoming the first Malawian  gold medalist in the sport at international level.

“I just wanted to congratulate him on winning championship. It is not easy to come out victorious at that level.

“As a country, we need to celebrate with such people to encourage them to aim higher,” he said.

Mdina said Chipanga has set the standards and others should aim to break the record.

On his part, Chipanga said he was humbled by Mdina’s gesture and was motivated to win the forthcoming events, including the Batumi World Olympiad to improve on his current title.

“I didn’t expect this and it shows people are recognising my achievement. By celebrating with me, it comes as a challenge that I should do even better. My target now it to improve on my rating so that I graduate from Candidate master to International master,” he said.

Malawi’s renowned arbiter, Gilton Mkumbwa, was also in attendance. n
