UK-based Malawian netballer Joyce Mvula has launched a fundraising initiative through Go Fund Me to raise money for the hosting of netball camps in the country.

In an interview yesterday, the former Blue Eagles shooter said netball has contributed to her life; hence, the effort to give a chance to up-and-coming players to develop.

Said Mvula: “Netball is more than just a career for me. It is a tool that has been very useful in changing a lot in my life. Netball made me go to a school my parents wouldn’t have afforded.

“Netball gave me an opportunity to come and live in the UK and be numbered among the legends in the netball community worldwide. It has empowered me as an African woman.”

She said she would like to inspire more Malawian girls to become netballers.

Said Mvula: “My goal is to reach out to as many girls as I can. Unearthing raw talent and giving them the exposure they deserve. So much talent out there that just needs some polishing and we have another legend right there.”

Mvula said so far she has raised £500 (K500 000) within a week and she is hopeful to meet her £5 000  (K5 million) target.

An article, published on www.gofundme.com, backed her initiative, saying it will help to expose raw Malawian talent.

Reads the article in part: “In the past decade or so, we have witnessed the soaring of Malawian netball stars abroad such as Mary Waya, Mwawi Kumwenda and last, but not least Joyce Mvula.

“Joyce Mvula in particular, has had a meteoric rise from her locally based club here in Malawi to shining in the Vitality Netball Super League in England.

“However, if Joyce wasn’t given the opportunity to learn, express her talent and being invested in, who knows if this light would have shined to many who have witnessed and been inspired by her talent and passion.”

Among others, money raised from the initiative will be used to buy netballs, bibs, cones, netball posts, hurdles and pumps.
