Netted for being in possession of medical drugs

Police in Dedza have arrested a 34-year-old man has for allegedly being found in possession of medical drugs without licence.

Dedza police deputy spokesperson Cassim Manda confirmed the arrest identifying the suspect as Ronald Chauya of Mtiyala village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mponda in Mangochi.arrest

Manda said Chauya was arrested on Saturday at an ad hoc roadblock police erected along Masasa-Monkey Bay road. After searching his vehicle, a bag fully loaded with assorted medical drugs was found.

According to Manda, the medical drugs include 9,000 tablets of chloramphenicol capsules, 10,000 tablets of amoxicillin capsules, 9,000 tablets of paracetamol, 180 bottles of gentamicin for injection,100 gentamycin tubes of eye/ear drops and 50 bottles of dexamethasone sodium phosphate.

“We have not yet established the value of the drugs as we are waiting for officials from the Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board to give us the total amount,” said Manda adding that they are still interviewing the suspect to establish where he got the drugs.

The suspect will be taken to court soon to answer charges of illegal possession of medical drugs contrary to section 35 as read with section 65 of Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons act of 1988.
