It is said a long journey starts with one idea then a single step. Budding musicians from Chinamwali Township in Zomba have established an eight-member band called Igwee.

The band, whose main objective is to mould young people to grow into extraordinary musicians, set off the ground last year in a bid to complement the music that the Millennium Sound Checks, Freedom Band, Police Orchestra Band as well as Songani Springs Band baked in the city a few decades ago.

Founder of the band, Christopher Mwaini, said the dream to initiate the band was conceived when he used to patronise music shows.

“Each time I saw musicians playing different instruments and voices at gigs, my heart used to burn with curiosity that one day fans have to dance to our music,” he said.

To have this dream come true, Mwaini established Igwee Music Studios, from which Igwee Band was born.

“Apart from recording, I also promoted artists songs on radio and television stations. A situation that attracted more musicians which in turn did me good for the materialisation of my band idea,” he said,

Mwaini said that life of sacrifice and hard work propelled him to finally land his dream.

“I am now glad that the band is finally here where youths are being given an opportunity to contribute to the country’s music industry. Our dream is to break into the international music market as a band,” he said.

Concurring with Mwaini, the band’s vocalist Culture Kondamache, who operates a bicycle taxi (kabaza) in the city, said he was born a musician, but lack of exposure thwarted his skills.

Kondamache, who dropped out of school due to poverty, said he desires to return to school as education will easily advance his music career.

“Experience from some performances we have had has taught me that fans need mature music so education is one of the elements that can boost my knowledge to sharpen my talent to dish to music followers good stuff,” he said.
