Communities in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalumba in Lilongwe say they are pleased with a new concrete bridge that has replaced a timber deck bridge in the area.

The new bridge connects Lilongwe Central Constituency, whose legislator is Lobin Lowe and Lilongwe Msozi North Constituency of Sosten Gwengwe.

Speaking on Friday when Lowe handed over the facility to community members, Chief Kalumba said the bridge will improve transportation of goods and services between the two areas.

“I, therefore, appeal to people to refrain from vandalising the facility,” he said.

A community member, Tifele Kanada from Mzingo Village, T/A Kalumba, said two people died between 2012 and 2015 while crossing the old timber bridge on their way to sell farm produce at Mitundu Market.

“We are now relieved to have a new bridge in the area,” he said.

Kanada also said school children will be able to safely attend classes on the other side of the river during the rainy season.

In his remarks, Lowe, who is also Minister of Agriculture, said the new bridge will save people’s lives in the area.

He said: “Now people will be able to cross the bridge during the rainy season to Lunguzu Road.

“Most importantly, farmers will transport their produce easily to the market at Mitundu.”

The bridge also connects people of the two areas to Chitsime Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation depot.
