New BT Police office complex to improve security—minister

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Grace Chiumia has said the proposed K6 billion Blantyre Police Station complex will improve security in the district which is the hub of business in the country.

The minister made the remarks on Monday when she toured the proposed site for the new Blantyre Police Station opposite Government Office Complex. The site is where the first station was before demolition.

“We have more officers, but the place is too small to accommodate them well. With this spacious building, we will be able to accommodate more and they will work in a manner that will please them.

“I want to salute the Inspector General of Police and Blantyre Community Policing Committee who have been working tirelessly to make this dream come true,” said Chiumia.

Commissioner of Police for the Southern Region, Dermister Chigwenembe, commended the community policing committee, saying the structure will be important both to the police and the community.

Blantyre Community Policing Committee chairperson Misheck Munthali challenged both the contractor and those tasked with the project to be transparent and accountable. n
